Guánica Bay & Gilligan's Island (Cayo Aurora)

17° 56.5′ N · 66° 52.3′ W

The Cayos de Caña Gorda are three low mangrove cays off Guánica, ringed by coral. The western one, Cayo Aurora, was nicknamed 'Gilligan's Island' in the 1970s; it is a state-park beach with a ranger dock and good snorkeling.

Practical

Coordinates from Wikipedia (cays). Per the Virgintino PR guide (~2015): Guánica Bay itself is easy to enter and well protected but commercial; most cruisers anchor among the Caña Gorda cays (crowded on weekends when the ferry runs from the mainland) or just NW of Punta Jacinto off the public beach. The cays are low and hard to see from seaward, and the extensive Arrecife Coral Breakers lies to starboard on entry: pick up lighted buoy #2 (17°55.20N 66°54.60W) and follow it to #3 and #4. There is a dinghy dock on Cayo Aurora. Cayo Aurora is 600 m from Punta Jacinto, and the cays can be reached by kayak.

Best for

A beach and snorkel anchorage with trade-wind breeze but no seaway
