Bahía Fosforescente (La Parguera)
17° 58.3′ N · 67° 0.8′ W · approximate
One of Puerto Rico's three year-round bioluminescent bays, where the dinoflagellate Pyrodinium bahamense sparks electric blue-green at every paddle stroke on a dark night.
Practical
Position approx: the bay as mapped on OpenStreetMap, about 2 nm east of La Parguera (Virgintino PR guide). Part of La Parguera Nature Reserve (Wikipedia). Local operator Paradise Scuba says it is the only bio-bay in Puerto Rico where swimming is permitted. Best on moonless nights, so check the moon phase. Go by dinghy, kayak or a local tour boat; do not anchor a yacht in the bay. Avoid sunscreen and repellent before swimming to protect the organisms.
