El Llano–Cartí Road & Cartí Mainland Ports

9° 27.3′ N · 78° 58.7′ W

The paved but steep mountain road from El Llano on the Pan-American Highway over the continental divide to the Cartí river ports is the only road into Guna Yala: crew, guests and shopping all come this way, with the 4x4 shuttles leaving Panama City before dawn.

Practical

Position is the OpenStreetMap node for the Cartí mainland hamlet beside the Río Grande de Cartí ports; the Cartí airstrip is just south (9.45125, -78.97954). Getting there: shared 4x4 transfers leave Panama City (Albrook, Casco Viejo, El Cangrejo) around 5 to 5:30 am, 2.5 to 3.5 hours, $25 to 40 per person each way (Panamaspot); Toucan Discovery quotes $35 to 50 and 2.5 hours plus a 30-minute launch. Budget option: any bus from Albrook to Agua Fría, Darién or Cañitas to the Cruce de Cartí at El Llano ($3, plus a $2.50 bus card to reach the platform), then shared cars from the Cruce that leave every few minutes, $10 to 15 per person (Wikivoyage). Only registered vehicles may use the final stretch. Fees: Guna Yala entry at the road checkpoint $20 to 22 per foreigner, $5 for residents/nationals, cash with passport (Nomad Sailors, updated Sep 2026); port fee $2 to 5 per person at the Cartí dock. The last ATMs are at the El Llano gas stations; there are none in the comarca. Drive in daylight: steep, winding and subject to weather delays (SailScanner). Pick-up by your dinghy or a licensed lancha from the Cartí docks or Punta Redonda ($2 dock fee, launch $5 in 2016). Make sure your boat and crew are legally cleared into Panama before using the road: police checkpoints check entry stamps. For return trips, the shuttles typically leave the islands mid-morning to reach the city by early afternoon.
