Carti Sugtupu Anchorage

9° 28.2′ N · 78° 57.8′ W

An anchorage off Carti Sugtupu (Gardi Sugdub), the crowded village island at the end of the road from Panama City, used for shopping, crew changes and a look at a working Guna community.

Practical

Position 09°28.160'N 078°57.819'W (Spirit of Argo 2016). Sand is thin in the shallows; they found holding in deeper water, 12–16 m. Some boats report it rolly in some conditions; Spirit of Argo found it calmer than expected and stayed overnight. Best dinghy docks are on the north side of the island, where fruit and veg shops are. No ATMs. Launch rides from the mainland dock to a boat are about $5 per person (2016, verify locally). Since June 2024 about 300 families have moved from the island to the new mainland village of Isber Yala, so expect fewer shops than older reports describe. Dogs are not allowed loose in Carti (2018).
