Chichime Outer Reef & Elkhorn Wreck Snorkel

9° 35.6′ N · 78° 53.0′ W · approximate

The barrier reef north of the two Chichime islands, where a shipwreck lies among very large elkhorn coral, a lively contrast to the shallow turquoise lagoon inside.

Practical

Coordinate approximate and derived: about 400 m north of the Uchutupu Pipigua islet outline in OpenStreetMap (way 12423159), on the outer-reef side; locate the wreck by eye. Tahina Expedition (2010) snorkelled the shallows off the islands and a wreck on the outer reef with very large elkhorn coral. Go by dinghy on calm days only: the outer reef faces the open Caribbean and northerly swell breaks on it in Northers (SailScanner). Watch for tour pangas crossing the lagoon. Elkhorn coral is fragile and protected: no standing, touching or anchoring on coral.

Best for

A reef-and-wreck snorkel from the classic Chichime anchorage

Season
