Caja de Muertos Nature Reserve

17° 53.7′ N · 66° 31.1′ W

'Coffin Island', a 244-ft high uninhabited island 6.5 nm SE of Ponce, protected as a nature reserve for its turtle nesting, dry forest and reefs. Hikers and beachgoers come over by ferry, and its lighthouse is visible far out to sea.

Practical

Coordinates from Wikipedia. Taíno rock art attests to visits over millennia; 17th-century pirates used it as a hideout. Ferries run from La Guancha in Ponce, so weekends and holidays are busy. The lighthouse: Fl W 30s, 297 ft, 12 M (Virgintino PR guide). Reserve etiquette: stay on trails, keep off turtle-nesting beaches, take nothing.

Best for

A hike, a beach and a staging stop for the run east
