Caja de Muertos Anchorage

17° 53.5′ N · 66° 31.7′ W · approximate

The lee anchorage off Caja de Muertos's west side, traditionally used by cruisers staging for an early-morning departure east before the trades fill in.

Practical

Position approx: in the island's western lee, checked to be in water on OpenStreetMap; the Virgintino PR guide's position 17°53.60N 66°31.30W is the light. Sand, excellent holding; anchor in about 10 ft. After a day of strong trades a surge can work around the SW tip into the anchorage; fine on light-wind nights. Crowded on weekends and holidays with day boats and ferries. Cross-check: Caja de Muertos Light (Fl W 30s, focal height 299 ft, range 18 M per Wikipedia; 12 M per the 2015 guide) is at 17.89316, -66.52119, at the island's highest point; Playa Pelícano (OSM) is at 17.88602, -66.52741, on the western (docking) side between the DRNA dock and Cerro Morrillo, and the anchorage pin sits off that shore. Rangers have reported boaters anchoring on the protected sand and beaches, so anchor clear of the swim area and the protected Playa Larga.
