Winter cold fronts on Long Island's lee coast

23° 21.2′ N · 75° 8.3′ W · approximate

From roughly November to April, cold fronts clock the wind through south and west to north every week or so, and every west-coast anchorage on Long Island becomes a lee shore for a day or two.

Practical

Plan your hides: Thompson Bay (protected from all directions except south-west), Joe Sound (all-round shelter if you can get in on the tide), Stella Maris Marina (shallow draft), and on the Atlantic side Clarence Town East behind Strachan Cay for NW–NE winds. Calabash Bay, Cape Santa Maria, Hog Cay, Millers Bay, Salt Pond and Gordon's are all open to the west. Position is Thompson Bay.
