Hike· Long Island· Bahamas — Eleuthera, Andros & the Out Islands
Red Shrimp Cave (Shrimp Hole)
23° 16.6′ N · 75° 6.0′ W
A ten-minute trail through the bush behind a ruined church leads to a limestone cave pool where tiny red cave shrimp live; a skylight drops 9-10 ft into the water.
Practical
Position is the OpenStreetMap 'Shrimp Hotel Cave' entrance. Signed from the Queen's Highway; follow the red arrows from the church ruin. Cape Santa Maria says the shrimp are thought to be critically endangered; do not disturb them. The pool is swimmable and fairly deep but full of sharp rock, so wear shoes and watch your toes and shoulders.
Best for
A short cave hike and swim on the drive south
