North-shore coral reef (Pitts Town to Gun Bluff)
22° 50.4′ N · 74° 19.6′ W · approximate
East of Pitts Town the north coast runs to Gun Bluff behind a fringing reef of healthy hard and soft corals, fewer fish than the west side but the most colourful coral gardens on the island.
Practical
Position approximate: placed offshore between Portland Harbour (GeoNames 22.8384, -74.3341) and Gun Bluff (22.8362, -74.3191). Surf breaks close in, so you must swim (or dinghy) out past it; the north shore is open to the Atlantic and only snorkelable in calm, settled weather with no northerly swell. The coast road east was washed out in a 2015 hurricane; a 4x4, a walk from the last driveway or the dinghy from the marina are the ways in. Private homes back parts of the shore.
Best for
Coral-garden snorkelling on a calm day from Crooked Island Marina
Season
Calm days only; untenable in N swell
