Cape Santa Maria reefs snorkel trips (Calabash Bay)
23° 38.9′ N · 75° 20.1′ W · approximate
Shallow coral reefs within a short boat ride of Calabash Bay, including Flamingo Tongue Reef, Barracuda Head and Turtle Heads, where turtles, rays and big parrotfish are the draw.
Practical
Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort runs a 3-hour snorkel and nature cruise (gear and guide included) from its Calabash Bay beach and lists reef sites by boat time: Flamingo Tongue Reef (12 minutes, beginner), Angelfish Reef (20 minutes, grey and queen angelfish), Turtle Heads (20 minutes, hawksbill and green turtles, stingrays) and Barracuda Head (25 minutes, shallow with large coral formations). Exact positions are not published; ask the resort's dive staff, or explore the coral heads around the Calabash Bay anchorage by dinghy in calm conditions. Stella Maris Resort describes shallow coral shelves and heads along the north end and protected west shore, and reef scenery with eagle rays and turtles on the Atlantic side. Calabash Bay rolls in north swell, so snorkel on settled east-to-south-east days. Position is the Calabash Bay anchorage.
