Sweetings Cay Anchorage (channel north of the settlement, shoal draft)

26° 37.9′ N · 77° 51.9′ W · approximate

A reference spot in the narrow channel between Sweetings Cay and Jackson's and Little Harbour Cays, just north of the fishing settlement of about 500 people at the far east end of Grand Bahama. It is the way to drop in on a working Bahamian fishing village that almost no cruising yachts reach, with bonefish flats in every direction.

Practical

Position is derived, not published: a point in open water about 0.15 nm from the nearest shore in the channel north of Sweetings Cay, placed by testing it against OpenStreetMap coastlines (Sweetings Cay way 22578351, Jackson's Cay way 22583757). No cruising guide, Waterway Guide or noforeignland listing publishes an anchorage, depths or holding here, so sound your way in and treat this only as a reference point. Southern Boating says the east end of Grand Bahama is seldom visited and has no detailed charts, and that a shallow-draft boat can explore the cays with help from local fishermen. Approach only with draft well under 5 ft, in good overhead light on a rising tide, and ask a local guide from McLean's Town. Expect tidal current in any channel between cays. Services: none for yachts. SailAbacos says the settlement is reached only by boat from McLean's Town (about 30 minutes), supplies come in by boat and medical care means a trip to the mainland. Nearest fuel and basics are at McLean's Town (see Petro Express East). The East Grand Bahama Protected Area (national park boundary in OpenStreetMap since 2015) lies just south, and Wikipedia places the settlement north of East Grand Bahama National Park.
