Beach· Great Harbour Cay· Bahamas — North

Shelling Beach and Shark Creek (Great Harbour Cay south tip)

25° 44.4′ N · 77° 49.5′ W

A wide sand bank at the south tip of Great Harbour Cay that uncovers at low tide, with a mangrove creek full of baby turtles, rays, juvenile sharks and spoonbills; you can wade out to Hawks Nest Cay near low water.

Practical

ActiveCaptain position (Shark Creek inlet, Shelling Beach side). The inlet is deep enough for a dinghy even near low tide. Best timing by dinghy: arrive about an hour before high tide and ride the falling tide out. Boaters in March 2016 walked to Hawks Nest Cay within an hour of low tide (waist deep at the deepest). Watch for barracuda. The island site also describes Bajito, a square mile of sand bank at the south end that rises at low tide and is covered in sand dollars.

Best for

Shelling, wading and wildlife at low tide
