Rose Island Basin (hurricane hole)

25° 5.2′ N · 77° 13.2′ W

A donut-shaped dredged basin entered from the south side of Rose Island, all that remains of a defunct resort project; a safe hurricane hole for shallow-draft boats.

Practical

Waterway Guide position N 25°05.207' W 077°13.247'; 8-12 ft inside. The canal is too narrow for adequate scope, so lie to two anchors. Best area is to the left after entering the channel. Check the entrance depth in good light before committing a deep keel. A 2011 cruiser account calls it the Donut Hole: a natural pond with a dredged entrance, fully protected from all directions, where some docks are privately held.
