Snorkel· Grand Bahama· Bahamas — North
Paradise Cove & Deadman's Reef
26° 34.8′ N · 78° 51.9′ W
Grand Bahama's best snorkel from the beach: a natural reef that runs along the shore about an eight-minute swim out, plus what the operator calls the largest contiguous reef-ball reef in the Bahamas. Angelfish, parrotfish, snapper and turtles are regulars, and the Red Bar on the deck serves cold Kalik and fried fish.
Practical
Position is the Paradise Cove snorkeling attraction on the beach (OpenStreetMap); the reef lies just offshore. Paradise Cove (phone 242-602-5180) rents gear (10% off if you bring your own), runs guided snorkels, kayak and paddleboard rental, freediving and spearfishing trips, and villas; the tourism board lists it open 10 am to sunset. The name likely dates to Prohibition rum-runners landing here at night. Best reached by car from Freeport or West End (about 15 miles west of Freeport). Exposed to the south; snorkel in light winds from the north or east.
