Ginn Sur Mer Canal Anchorage (south of West End)

26° 40.6′ N · 78° 57.9′ W

The wide, 1.5-nm dredged canal and basin of the abandoned Ginn Sur Mer megaresort, 3 nm southeast of the Old Bahama Bay entrance. Waterway Guide calls it by far the calmest and most secure anchorage at the west end of Grand Bahama, and it is a favourite free stop before or after crossing the Gulf Stream.

Practical

Position is the Waterway Guide anchorage listing (N 26 40.577 / W 078 57.914). Depth 10 to 13 ft (listing); a May 2025 review reports 3 to 5 m everywhere with a wide, easy entrance; a 5.4 ft-draft sailboat (Feb 2024) had no issues. Good holding in sand, no current, all-round protection from the sea, room for many boats. A 2022 reviewer notes the surrounding land is low, so it is not quite a hurricane hole, and that the land is probably private property with nothing ashore at all. Ginn is pronounced to rhyme with 'kin'. No fuel, water or services: Old Bahama Bay (fuel, customs) is 3 nm NW. Not a port of entry; clear in at Old Bahama Bay first. This is the nearest published anchorage to Bootle Bay and Blue Marlin Cove, about 2 nm further SE along the shore.

Best for

A calm, free overnight before or after the Gulf Stream crossing

Season
