Anchorage· Gun Cay· Bahamas — North

Honeymoon Harbour (Gun Cay)

25° 35.2′ N · 79° 18.2′ W

A small rock-rimmed cove at the north end of Gun Cay with turquoise water over white sand, a beach, snorkelling on the rocks and southern stingrays that glide up to anyone who wades in: what most people imagine a Bahamian anchorage should look like.

Practical

Position from ActiveCaptain. Enter from the west straight in between the large rocks with 9 ft minimum; most of the cove has 9 ft or more, shoaling to the east and towards the beach. A 6 ft 3 in draft entered at low tide from 25 35.6859'N 79 18.5213'W and anchored with about 8 ft under the keel at 25 35.3372'N 79 18.3015'W (2019 review). Best in south and east winds; exposed to west and north swell, and day-tripper boats crowd it on weekends. Gun Cay has been sold to a private owner, so going ashore to explore is no longer possible (2024 review). A second spot just east ('Honeymoon Hbr East', 25.58718, -79.30097) has good holding in about 8 ft. Stingray trips run December to April (Neal Watson).
