Grand Cay Settlement

27° 13.4′ N · 78° 19.4′ W

A tight-knit fishing and lobstering village of a few hundred people spread over the little cays south of Walker's, the only settlement in the far north. It feels nothing like the polished Loyalist villages farther south: working boats, conch piles, a homecoming tournament at Easter and some of the friendliest people in the Abacos.

Practical

Coordinate from Wikipedia (27°13'26"N, 78°19'26"W). Population 383 at the 2010 census; most residents fish and lobster. Richard Nixon visited through his friend Robert Abplanalp, who held the Walker's Cay lease. ActiveCaptain notes (2017-2019, pre-Dorian): walk the neighborhood loop; there was a BTC store (SIM cards), a small grocery, a liquor store and several bars and take-out stands; fishermen came in around 6 pm to sell their catch to the fish house for shipment to Freeport (2011). One 2018 visitor found the shoreline littered. Dinghy in to the docks in the harbor (Rosie's dock has historically been the landing). Strong BTC 4G signal from the tower. Confirm what reopened after Hurricane Dorian (2019).
