Octopus Garden Reef, Highbourne Cay

24° 43.0′ N · 76° 49.9′ W · approximate

A shallow maze of coral heads whose sprawling, arm-like formations gave the reef its name, sitting in only 6-8 ft of water. Squirrelfish and grunts pack the overhangs, octopus hide in the rubble, and turtles cruise through - one of the easiest, most rewarding snorkels in the northern Exumas.

Practical

6-8 ft depth, dinghy-accessible from the marina or the west anchorage. Go on a rising tide near slack for best visibility and least current. Suitable for children and weak swimmers. Fly a dive flag - there is small-boat traffic. Marina staff will point you at the exact heads.

Best for
