Surprise Cove State Marine Park (Prince William Sound)

60° 45.6′ N · 148° 23.0′ W

One of the most popular anchorages in western Prince William Sound, at the western side of the mouth of Cochrane Bay. A 1983 State Parks document calls it a well-protected anchorage for pleasure boats with two small embayments.

Practical

Coordinate is the anchorage area in an Alaska DEC response plan (60 deg 45.56 min N, 148 deg 23.00 min W). The plan says vessels should use the southern entrance and warns of shoal water with numerous reefs and rocks. Bears are present during salmon runs. State Parks lists a latrine and a bear locker on the main camping beach, about seven campsites, a trail to North Lake, stream water, and tide pools at Point Cochrane (fair-weather surf there). The page gives no depths or holding-ground details (unconfirmed).

Best for

A sheltered anchorage with a short lake hike

Season
