Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (Whittier)
60° 47.0′ N · 148° 46.1′ W
The one-lane road and rail tunnel is the only road into Whittier, so every charter crew and trailered boat passes through it. Traffic alternates direction in set windows through the day.
Practical
Coordinate is the OSM tunnel way (its centre), not a portal. DOT's published summer schedule runs May 1 to September 30: open 5:30 am to 11:15 pm daily, with Whittier-bound and Bear Valley-bound traffic alternating each half hour. The winter schedule, in effect from October 1 to April 30, is 7 am to 10:45 pm with the gates locked at 11 pm. The DOT PDFs are not dated to a year, so the exact 2026 summer hours are unconfirmed; check the DOT page or call 1-877-611-2586. Oversize vehicles are allowed only at set times Monday to Thursday. Trains share the tunnel and can add 15 to 30 minutes of delay. Tickets are roundtrip and bought through the Yodel app; I did not read the toll tables, so check the DOT toll schedule for cars and trailers. Past closures have followed rock falls (the date of the one I found was unclear), so allow slack on charter changeover day.
