Spicemas (Grenada Carnival)

12° 3.2′ N · 61° 45.2′ W

Spicemas is Grenada's carnival, the last of the Caribbean season, held every August. It brings J'ouvert's oil-and-tar-daubed Jab Jab devils at dawn, glow-stick Monday Night Mas, and the Parade of the Bands in feathers and sequins on Carnival Tuesday.

Practical

Position is the St George's Wikipedia/GeoHack town coordinate, where the main parades and shows are held. Spicemas runs over about two weeks in August, with the big parades on the last two days (Wikivoyage). The official site's 2027 schedule runs from the Carnival Queen pageant on Thursday August 5 through Soca Monarch, Panorama and Dimanche Gras to J'ouvert and Monday Night Mas on August 9 and Fancy Mas on Tuesday August 10. Check spicemasgrenada.com for the current year. Wear old clothes for J'ouvert, because the Jab Jabs will smear you. Security: Noonsite and Doyle report that boardings and thefts peak before and during Carnival and Christmas, with break-ins on unattended boats outside St George's harbour. Leave a crew member aboard or a cockpit light on and the boat locked during night events.
