North-West Swell on the West Coast Anchorages

14° 44.4′ N · 61° 10.7′ W · approximate

The west-coast bays of Martinique are sheltered from the trade winds but open to the west. Swell from the north or west makes them rolly or dangerous, and the Saint-Pierre mooring operator may order its field evacuated.

Practical

Sources: the Saint-Pierre roadstead 'is deep and has only westerly winds to fear' (Wikipedia). The Rade de Saint-Pierre says it is exposed to NW swell and staff may order evacuation if heavy swell or winds of 80 km/h or more are forecast. Anse du Carbet can be violently battered in N or NW gales, which are fortunately infrequent (Martinique tourism). Anse Mitan becomes very unpleasant in a westerly swell, and Anse à l'Âne is often disturbed by chop and NW swell (ActiveCaptain). When a north or west swell is forecast, move to the inner Baie de Fort-de-France (Trois-Îlets, Étang Z'Abricots) or round to Le Marin. Watch the Météo-France marine forecast. Position is the Saint-Pierre roadstead, approximate.
