Morne Champagne Hike

14° 29.7′ N · 61° 4.9′ W

A rocky 45-minute trail over Morne Champagne, a volcanic hill that erupted about 1.07 million years ago, linking Grande Anse d'Arlet to the bourg of Les Anses-d'Arlet with views over both bays.

Practical

Doyle Guides: from the Grande Anse dinghy dock turn right on the road and look for the Morne Champagne sign on your right (about 3 minutes). Follow the road, take the right fork, then look for the path heading left near the top. The path climbs through dry scrub to a plateau with side paths to viewpoints, then descends to the bourg; at the final junction the left branch climbs to a shrine. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, returning by the trail or the road. From the bourg end, turn left from the dock along the boardwalk and look for the signed trail on the left. Wikipedia also notes basalt rock-climbing routes (up to 7b) reached from this trail. Hot and exposed, so carry water and start early. ActiveCaptain says it is a good dog walk.
