Le Marin Cyclone Holes (anchoring only on hurricane alert)

14° 27.5′ N · 60° 52.2′ W · approximate

The mangrove-lined 'trous à cyclone' at the back of the Cul-de-Sac du Marin are the island's traditional hurricane refuge. They are closed to ordinary anchoring and open only when a cyclone alert is declared.

Practical

Position is approximate: an anchorage-area seamark mapped in OpenStreetMap within the bay. Use it only to locate the area. Noonsite reports that the authorities enforce no-anchoring in the traditional hurricane holes, marked by yellow buoys, except during hurricane warnings. The marina's cyclone instructions repeat that the cyclone holes may only be used during a cyclone alert. Marina berth-holders must double or triple their lines, strip sails and canvas, and in some numbered berth runs put out an anchor. Cyclone insurance covering wreck removal, damage to port structures and third parties is compulsory. When an orange cyclone alert is declared, the town opens a free shelter at École Mixte A (+596 596 74 90 02).
