Jack-a-Dan Reef Shallows Snorkel

12° 29.7′ N · 61° 28.0′ W · approximate

A small island reef just off Hillsborough. Coral fingers and sand patches hold schooling fish, moray eels, stingrays and the odd nurse shark, and the A World Adrift sculpture park is close by.

Practical

Coordinate is approx: in the water about 55 m off Jack-a-Dan's south shore (from the OpenStreetMap islet outline). Carriacou.biz describes the west side as an easy reef garden from about 6 to 8 m, descending over coral fingers to 16-20 m. It has big sand patches with hard and soft coral, crabs, flounders, garden eels, myriads of schooling fish, moray eels, stingrays and the odd nurse shark. Snorkellers stay on the shallow table and ridge edges. There are many lionfish (dive shops cull them); don't touch them, as the spines are venomous. Noforeignland cruisers (2025) say the snorkelling is decent but coral health is poor, and the shallow water and reef need careful dinghy handling. Moorings off the island were reported in good condition in late 2025 but gusty overnight. The sculpture park (A World Adrift, 4 m deep) is a short swim or dinghy hop away and carries a US$10 per day snorkel surcharge through Dive Carriacou (2025).
