Caravelle Peninsula Nature Reserve Trail (Château Dubuc)

14° 46.1′ N · 60° 53.4′ W · approximate

Two waymarked loops through dry forest, mangrove boardwalks and wind-blasted Atlantic cliffs to the Caravelle lighthouse. It is the finest coastal walk on the windward side.

Practical

Coordinates are approximate, at the Château Dubuc trailhead. Lonely Planet: the short loop is 2.5 km, about 1.5 hours, yellow, easy, through dry forest and the mangrove of the Baie du Trésor. The long loop is 7 km, 3.5-4 hours, blue, moderate, via the lighthouse, the weather station, Anse Chandelier, Anse Bois-Vert, Anse Bénitier, Pointe Caracoli and back along the Baie du Trésor. Visorando: very well signed, with almost no shade on the Atlantic section and possible beehives near the start. Car parks fill early, so start early. The reserve protects 422 ha and about 80 bird species including the rare white-breasted thrasher (gorge blanche).
