Dive· Great Dog· Virgin Islands (BVI, USVI and Spanish Virgins)
The Chimney (Great Dog)
18° 28.9′ N · 64° 27.8′ W · approximate
One of the most famous dives in the Dog Islands: an unusual coral structure of arches, ridges and canyons, long told to be a favourite of Jacques Cousteau.
Practical
Coordinate approximate (west side of Great Dog; Dive BVI gives the island but not the exact mooring). Depth 30 to 45 ft, novice. Bring a light to see the colours inside. Use the NPT dive (white) moorings; day use only, permit required. Sunchaser Scuba gives 25 to 45 ft: the route passes high-walled canyons to a large arch lined with yellow coral; the name is the rock-climbing term for where two cliff faces meet. Yacht Warriors notes several well-maintained day-use moorings around the Dogs.
Best for
Easy, photogenic dive or deep snorkel
