Sandy Cay

18° 26.2′ N · 64° 42.6′ W

A 13.57-acre national park islet between Tortola and Jost Van Dyke with a sweeping palm-backed beach, no bar and no buildings, and a trail through dry woodland to cliffs at its east end. Laurance Rockefeller looked after it for 40 years before it passed to the Trust in 2008.

Practical

Coordinate from Wikipedia/GeoHack. National Parks Trust rules: no camping or fires, no removing shells, sand or plants, no pets, no music devices or noise, no beaching of boats or jet skis, no personal watercraft, no fishing within the Habitat Management Area, no events without permission. A rat eradication in 2003 protects nesting hawksbill, green and leatherback turtles, laughing gulls, bridled terns and red-billed tropicbirds. Landing by dinghy is difficult in winter north-east swell; can be buggy in still weather (Wikivoyage). The Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society helps maintain the trail (Wikipedia).

Best for

A wild, quiet beach and short nature walk
