Mosquito Pier Shore Dive (Vieques)

18° 8.9′ N · 65° 30.9′ W

The pilings and rubble of the mile-long Navy causeway on Vieques' northwest coast make the island's signature shore dive, with turtles, rays, lobsters, eels, octopus and tarpon in 40 ft or less.

Practical

Position is the NOAA Mosquito Pier tide station at the pier. Black Beard Sports (2026): shore entry, maximum depth 40 ft; marine life includes sea turtles, rays, lobsters, eels, octopus, tarpon and possibly nurse sharks; guided two-tank trips start at 8 am. Wind and swell affect conditions: high winds or thunderstorms cancel trips. The pier lies inside the 33 CFR 334.1480 Navy restricted strip around the west end, a Navy-era rule still on the books (no entry, swimming or diving except on official business), although guided dives run here: go with the local operator and check current rules rather than diving it independently from a yacht. Do not anchor off the pier; ferries and work boats use the area.
