Jumbie Bay Snorkel
18° 21.1′ N · 64° 46.4′ W
A tiny, secluded north-shore cove between Hawksnest and Trunk Bay, with a shallow reef on its east side and triggerfish, angelfish and hard and soft corals off the point.
Practical
Position is the GNIS point for Jumbie Bay. St John Island Guide: great snorkeling on the right (east side) where the reef is shallow, though it can be rough; current can be rough at times; large waves can be dangerous, so skip it in a north swell. By land: about six roadside parking spots on North Shore Road and a 320 ft trail down to a 100-yard beach; no facilities. Jumbie Beach is closed to commercial group access from commercial vessels (Compendium). The cove has no NPS mooring or tether named in the Compendium; by boat, pick up a Hawksnest Bay mooring and dinghy around, or snorkel over from Trunk Bay. Do not stand on or touch coral.
Best for
A quiet reef snorkel away from the Trunk Bay crowds
Season
Best in calm conditions; avoid in winter north swell
