Isla Piñeros and Cabeza de Perro

18° 15.1′ N · 65° 35.5′ W · approximate

A 1-mile wooded island with a 249-ft peak off Ceiba, with Isla Cabeza de Perro and its light just to the east: the southern sentinels of the Puerto del Rey approach.

Practical

Position is approximate: the center of an unnamed OpenStreetMap island polygon matching Coast Pilot 5's description (8 miles south of Cabo San Juan Light, 1 mile long). Coast Pilot 5: Cabeza de Perro Light (18°14'59"N, 65°34'35"W, 80 ft) is shown from a skeleton tower with a red and white diamond daymark on the east point of Isla Cabeza de Perro, which has a large detached rock off its rocky northeast bluff; Pasaje Medio Mundo west of Isla Piñeros is foul, with 15 ft through a narrow crooked channel for small boats with local knowledge only. The island lies off the former Roosevelt Roads base (Wikipedia notes 40 percent of base land became a wetlands preserve); no published anchorage guidance for yachts was found, so treat it as a landmark and check current restrictions with the port authorities.
