Great Thatch Island

18° 23.2′ N · 64° 44.3′ W

A steep, densely wooded, uninhabited island across The Narrows from St John, made a whole-island national park in April 2026; stone walls and cisterns of the 18th and 19th century community that farmed, fished and traded here still stand in the forest.

Practical

Coordinate from Wikipedia/GeoHack. NPT (2026): about 290 acres; the island is CLOSED to visitors and landing is not permitted while archaeological, botanical and LiDAR surveys are under way; the surrounding waters are a marine protected area with NO anchoring or mooring permitted. Artifacts are protected under the National Parks Act (2006). Greater flamingos visit the salt pond; hawksbill and green turtles feed on the reef and seagrass. Enjoy it from the water while transiting The Narrows or Thatch Island Cut. Coast Pilot 5: 1.7 miles long, peak 613 ft, east point bold and steep-to.

Best for
