Anegada Walking Trails (Bones Bight Shoreline & Interior)

Flat, empty walking on the BVI's only coral island: a shoreline route that skirts more than four miles of virtually undeveloped north-shore beach, and an interior trail across the salt-pond country between the airport and Jack Bay, with flamingos, wading birds, ospreys, wild orchids and, with luck, Anegada rock iguanas.

Position is approximate: the GeoNames point for Bones Bight on the north shore, used as a trailhead marker (taxis and rentals from Setting Point reach the north-shore beaches; Anegada Beach Club sits at the west end of this stretch). BVI Diving's 2016 trail write-up describes the shoreline trail (more than four miles along the north coast) and the inland trail through the centre of the island between the airport and Jack Bay, with views of the Caribbean to the south and the Atlantic to the north; it warns the island is only about 28 ft high, so there is no climbing, but the flat sandy roads are tiring: carry plenty of water. A travel blog (c. 2016) describes the Bone Bight Nature Trail through the interior's salt pools, with the rare rock iguana (roughly 400 remained at the time) and blooming wild orchids. No official trail map, distances or managing body could be confirmed; ask the BVI National Parks Trust or your taxi driver about current conditions. There is no shade: go early morning or late afternoon with sun protection and insect repellent for the ponds. Combine with the Flamingo Pond Lookout (OSM 18.7229, -64.3633), which has a viewing platform, telescope and bird-identification board and is free (BVI Tourism). The salt ponds are a protected bird sanctuary and Ramsar site: stay on the tracks and do not approach the flamingos.
