Flamingo Pond (Anegada Salt Ponds)

18° 43.4′ N · 64° 21.8′ W

The great salt ponds of Anegada's west end, a Ramsar wetland since 1999, where Caribbean flamingos hunted out by 1950 have been re-established and now number in the hundreds (about 200 in 2016). A free lookout platform with a fixed telescope lets you watch the flock without disturbing it.

Practical

Position is the Flamingo Pond Lookout (BVI Tourism; OpenStreetMap agrees); the main pond itself lies north of it (GeoNames Flamingo Pond 18.73463, -64.38628). The lookout is on the road east of the Setting Point ferry dock toward the airport; free, with a bird identification board. Bring binoculars: the birds are usually distant. Captive birds donated in 1991 were released here and now breed in the wild (BVI National Parks Trust). Do not walk out onto the pond margins. Taxi drivers will stop here on the way to Loblolly.
