Thai Navy Memorial Day (17 January)
12° 10.7′ N · 102° 23.3′ E
Each 17 January the Royal Thai Navy marks the anniversary of the 1941 Battle of Ko Chang at the Laem Ngop memorial, with naval ships, a religious service and wreaths floated for the 36 sailors killed.
Practical
In 2019 the commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Fleet led the 17 January ceremony at the Koh Chang Naval Battle Monument in Trat, with the provincial governor. It included a religious service, the release of marine animals to make merit, and a wreath floated for the sailors lost off Koh Lim (Pattaya Mail). Expect naval vessels and official traffic in the strait between Laem Ngop and Koh Chang that morning. Confirm the programme with the Laem Ngop District Office.
