Koh Taen Reef Snorkelling
9° 22.7′ N · 99° 57.1′ E · approximate
Several Koh Taen beaches have fringing coral close to shore with tropical fish, the easiest reef snorkelling near Samui's south coast.
Practical
Approximate position off Koh Taen's east-coast fringing reef, derived from Southeast Asia Pilot's description of the reef next to the anchorage. Snorkel from the dinghy and tie to a buoy or anchor on sand; do not drop a hook on coral. Visibility in the Gulf near Samui is often limited (the Pilot calls the water around the islands generally turbid), so pick a calm, sunny morning. Island Spirit charter guide (2023): just south of the southern breakwater of the dredged channel there are three buoys directly over a coral reef; use them rather than anchoring. Wikipedia: the reefs around Koh Taen survived and partly recovered from dynamite fishing that went on until the 1980s. No dive operator consulted publishes Koh Taen or Koh Mat Sum as a scuba site: they are sold as snorkel trips.
