Koh Rang Yai Anchorage and Moorings

7° 57.1′ N · 98° 26.7′ E

A wooded island 4 nm from Boat Lagoon with a lovely beach on its west side and a daytime recreation area. It is the classic place to wait for the tide before running the Boat Lagoon or Royal Phuket Marina channel. Little Koh Rang Noi lies just to the north.

Practical

Anchor off the beach in 6-9 m on sand and mud; good holding in both seasons on either coast (SEAP). The NE-side spot (7 57.379 N, 98 27.085 E) is sometimes more comfortable in strong south-westerlies. A brisk current runs through the anchorage on springs; do not try to swim ashore. Dinghy to mid-beach at all tides. Ashore: a daytime restaurant and, at the time of SEAP's writing, canoes, mountain bikes, mini golf and snorkel gear for hire. Longtails run here from Laem Hin pier in about 20 minutes (Phuket 101).
