Koh Rang Reefs

11° 47.1′ N · 102° 23.7′ E

The reefs around Koh Rang and its satellite islets (Koh Yak, Koh Laun, Koh Kra and Koh Thian) are the archipelago's main diving and snorkelling grounds. They are typically 10–15 m, with anemones and clownfish, stingrays, moray eels and big schools of reef fish.

Practical

Iamkohchang dive guide: Koh Rang sites are typically 10–15 m. Koh Yak is under 10 m (anemones, clownfish, stingrays, morays); Koh Kra off the north coast is a gently sloping reef under 5 m, good for new divers; Koh Thian has good scenery though crowds have damaged the reef; Hin Kaduang is two pinnacles to almost 30 m with turtles. The snorkel guide singles out Koh Lon (Koh Laun), Koh Yak and Koh Thonglang, northeast of Koh Rang, as the best snorkel spots. The coordinate is OpenStreetMap's 'Koh Laun' dive point. Visibility is about 10–15 m from November to April and poorer around Koh Rang in the SW monsoon. Full-day boat trips from Bang Bao arrive around 11am, so dive or snorkel early or late.
