Koh Phayam Anchorage

9° 43.7′ N · 98° 23.0′ E

Ao Yai (Long Beach), a 3 km west-coast bay on laid-back Koh Phayam, about 20 nm west of Ranong, with low-key resorts and beach restaurants. The island is often called 'Phuket 30 years ago'.

Practical

Southeast Asia Pilot position 09°43.652N, 98°22.967E, 82 nm from Patong. Anchor in 3–6 m in the northern corner of the bay; the pilot also gives 6–10 m on sand off the north end, with good holding. When arriving from the west, give the rocks off the headland plenty of room. Best shelter in the NE monsoon; open to SW-season swell. Moorings are increasingly laid to protect coral, so check their condition before trusting one. There are no marina facilities, so come provisioned. Limited provisions and one ATM are in the village by the main pier on the east side, and motorbikes can be rented. Ferries run from Ranong: slow boat about 2 hours, speedboat 30–40 minutes (Wikivoyage).
