A remote anchorage at Tarutao's southern tip, just west of Koh Panan, off the site of the island's second penal colony, with Langkawi's peaks across the strait.
Practical
Southeast Asia Pilot (6°31.396N 99°41.212E): anchor in 5 m just west of Koh Panan, NE season only. Little remains of the former penal colony for political prisoners, salt factory and later village, but young rangers stationed here can show you around. The Koh Panan / Koh Belitung Besa passage to the east is 32 m deep throughout, with current up to 2 kn at mid-tide (see the passage entry). Boat access only.
