Ao Bang Bao Anchorage

11° 57.9′ N · 102° 19.0′ E

A muddy-bottomed bay on Koh Chang's south coast, sheltered in both monsoons, beside the long stilted pier of Bang Bao village. Nearly every dive, snorkel and inter-island boat leaves from here.

Practical

Southeast Asia Pilot waypoint 11°57.939N 102°19.004E, 12 nm from Khlong Son. Anchor just west of the stilted jetty in 3–5 m, mud, near the lighthouse. Sheltered in both seasons. Land the dinghy at the dock at Buddha View Restaurant on the north side of the pier. Do not beach the dinghy: the beach is soft, sticky mud at low tide. Expect heavy dive-, tour- and speedboat traffic early morning and late afternoon. Going east to Salak Phet, stay outside the 12 m contour to clear two submerged rocks (see the Bang Bao – Salak Phet passage).

Best for

All-season shelter, plus dive and ferry connections
