North Island Turtle Nesting and Rewilding (Noah's Ark Project)
4° 23.6′ S · 55° 14.7′ E
North Island has the highest density of nesting green turtles in the Inner Islands and over 400 hawksbill and green nests a year (2023-24), the payoff of the 'Noah's Ark' rewilding that cleared alien species and brought back endemics.
Practical
Pin is the island centroid. Monitoring since 1995-98 (trained by Dr Jeanne Mortimer); hawksbill nests up sixfold and greens 29-fold since protection began, and hawksbills here nest in daylight. Rats eradicated in a 2005 helicopter-supported operation with ICS and FFEM. Do not approach nesting beaches by dinghy; view from the water only.

Season
