Anse Mondon (Silhouette)
4° 27.5′ S · 55° 13.2′ E · approximate
A secluded, roadless bay on Silhouette's north coast, backed by the rainforest of Silhouette National Park; the overnight stop The Moorings uses on its Mahé-side itineraries, prized for clear water, snorkelling and sunsets.
Practical
Coordinate approx: GeoNames places the cove ('Anse Mondean') at 4°27'S 55°13'E (minute precision only); the pin is set just off the north coast at that longitude. Fix your own position on the chart plotter and anchor in sand by eye. A cruising account gives 5-15 m with good holding in sand for the Silhouette east/north-shore bays (Anse Lascars and Anse Mondon), but approaches pass granite boulders, so come in with the sun high and a bow lookout. Comfortable in the southeast trades (May-Oct); the northwest monsoon (Dec-Mar) can make it untenable. The Moorings (14-day SE-wind itinerary) states anchoring is free of charge but landing needs a permit from the Island Conservation Society; the area overview lists Silhouette among islands needing Islands Development Company (IDC) written landing permission, so ask your charter base or IDC before going ashore. No facilities ashore: the bay is uninhabited. The waters lie inside Silhouette Marine National Park (1987): no fishing, spearfishing or collecting. Anse Poule Bleu (Mahé west coast) to Anse Mondon is about 10 nm (Moorings). The bay can also be reached on foot from La Passe (about 2 hours over smooth granite slabs, some scrambling).
Best for
Quiet overnight under the national-park peaks in the southeast trades
Season
May–Oct (SE trades); untenable in NW monsoon swell
