Grande Barbe (Silhouette)

4° 29.9′ S · 55° 12.7′ E · approximate

A wild, roughly 2 km beach on Silhouette's west coast with the ruins of a former village in the bush and a dozen free-roaming giant tortoises; also a hawksbill nesting beach patrolled by the Island Conservation Society.

Practical

Coordinate approx: GeoNames gives the cove at 4°30'S 55°13'E (minute precision); pin moved to the west coast at that latitude. Reached by the 4-hour Grande Barbe trail or by boat. Exposed west coast: a beach landing only in calm conditions. No facilities. No anchoring guidance was found for Grande Barbe; treat it as a calm-day stop and do not land on the turtle-nesting beach at night. No source found that supports Grande Barbe or Anse Lascars as a northwest-monsoon anchorage; the cruising account that covers Silhouette says NW monsoon conditions can make its anchorages untenable, so in Dec-Mar plan Silhouette as a calm-day visit only.
