Grand Anse, La Digue (no anchorage: surf and rips)

4° 22.6′ S · 55° 50.8′ E · approximate

A warning, not an anchorage: La Digue's big southeast-facing beach has no protecting reef, breaking surf and rip currents, and is no place to anchor or land a dinghy - visit it by bicycle from La Passe instead.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: about 340 m off the Grande Anse beach outline on OpenStreetMap, marking the water to avoid. SeyVillas: Grand Anse has no protective coral reef, so the raw power of the ocean is felt here, currents are strong especially in the monsoon season, and signs warn of dangerous currents; OpenStreetMap's beach note reads 'extremely dangerous rip tide currents, swim to either side when caught in current'; Wikivoyage says it is not always safe to swim. The southeast coast faces straight into the southeast trades (May–Oct). No cruising guide consulted lists an anchorage here; the nearest east-coast anchorage, Anse Cocos, is only an option in northwesterlies. Reach Grand Anse overland (about 30 minutes by bike from La Passe) and eat at Loutier Coco.
