Denis Island Anchorage (West Side)
3° 48.4′ S · 55° 39.1′ E · approximate
The only anchorage the US sailing directions give for Denis: deep water off the west side, in the lee of the island in the southeast trades.
Practical
Pub. 171 (2010): anchor W of Denis in 35-40 m, sand and coral. Have plenty of scope and a trip line on coral. A shallow bank with depths under 10 m runs 2.5 nm N of the island, with 4.5-5.5 m up to 1.8 nm off from NW through N to NE; more coral heads than charted are likely, so take extreme caution within 3 nm N of Denis. Surf breaks heavily on the E and S shores in the SE trades, so the west side is the lee then. Open to the NW monsoon (December to March). Needs prior Seychelles Ports Authority authorisation for charter yachts. Coordinate is approximate: plotted about 0.5 nm west of the island's west shore from the OpenStreetMap outline. Sound in before anchoring.
Best for
An overnight stop on the way to or from Bird Island in the SE trades
Season
SE trades (May-Oct) best; exposed in NW monsoon
