Assumption Sand Dunes

9° 44.8′ S · 46° 30.8′ E · approximate

The largest dune system in Seychelles, rising to about 30-32 m at the south-east end of the island and visible far out to sea.

Practical

A conspicuous landmark on approach (Pub. 171). The island was stripped by guano mining until 1983-84, which wiped out its tortoises, endemic land birds and the Abbott's booby. A race of souimanga sunbird and an endemic day gecko survive. Coordinate is approximate: SE end of the OpenStreetMap outline.
