Aldabra Lagoon Tour and Grand Poche Frigatebird Colony
9° 25.0′ S · 46° 21.0′ E · approximate
SIF-led boat tours through the mangroves into the vast tidal lagoon, two-thirds of which dries at low tide, to see the Indian Ocean's largest frigatebird breeding colony at Grand Poche.
Practical
Lagoon access is allowed only in SIF tourism zones, behind the SIF lead boat, at low speed with engines quiet; nobody leaves the boat at Grand Poche. Keep 30 m from roosting or nesting frigatebirds and 10 m from other seabirds. Do not walk on exposed lagoon floor. The tidal range at Aldabra is about 2.7 m, and the lagoon tide lags the ocean. Coordinate is approximate: the atoll centre (in the lagoon); SIF gives the exact route on arrival.
