African Banks Tern Colonies
4° 52.8′ S · 53° 23.1′ E · approximate
An Important Bird Area where sooty terns, brown noddies, black-naped, roseate and greater crested terns and wedge-tailed shearwaters breed, and green and hawksbill turtles nest.
Practical
The sooty-tern colony fell from more than 40,000 pairs in 1955 to about 10,000 by 1995, and poaching remains a serious problem. Watch from the water and keep well off breeding birds. Coordinate is approximate, just off the island.
